Volvo Trucks Introduces Stop/Start Functionality to Reduce Fuel Use and Emissions

Volvo Trucks has enhanced its I-Roll technology with a new stop/start engine functionality, designed to further reduce fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions.

The new addition is based on the existing I-See and I-Roll technologies, which use GPS data, topographic mapping, and vehicle load parameters to optimise gear shifting, throttle control, and coasting. The recently added stop/start feature turns the engine off temporarily when an oncoming downward slope is identified along the route. Using road and curvature data, the system activates this function automatically at speeds above 60 km/h.

The new stop/start engine feature temporarily shuts off the engine when driving downhill, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

“Our engineers have done it again, innovating a new engine technology that contributes to making transport by truck more fuel-efficient. As part of our decarbonization strategy, we will continue to innovate to make our combustion engines even better and to reduce our impact on the environment.”

says Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management.

Depending on conditions such as topography and ambient temperature, the enhanced I-Roll system can deliver up to one per cent additional fuel and CO2 savings, on top of the reductions already achieved through Volvo’s existing fuel-efficiency technologies. This addition is part of Volvo’s broader push for more sustainable transport solutions, highlighted by the recent victory in the 2025 Green Truck Award test with the Volvo FH Aero.

The new feature will be offered on the Volvo FH and FH Aero with a 13-litre diesel engine. Customers can order it from November 2025.
