Two Liebherr tower cranes, a 71 EC-B and a 125 EC-B Flat-Top, are playing a crucial role in the meticulous restoration of the Parador de Santiago de Compostela, a key cultural landmark in Galicia. The project, part of a national initiative to preserve Spain’s historic buildings, faces significant logistical and technical hurdles due to its tight urban location and high public traffic.

Modern Cranes Restore Historic Landmarks

The Parador de Santiago de Compostela, a renowned cultural landmark in Galicia, originally served as a pilgrim hospital and is now a top-earning five-star hotel within Spain’s state-owned Paradores network. The ongoing restoration aims to preserve its heritage while implementing structural and technical improvements. This work includes renovating the facades facing Plaza del Obradoiro and the building’s western side, repairing the Renaissance courtyards, restoring the historic cornice, and conserving the royal chapel and its dome.

Liebherr’s 71 EC-B and 125 EC-B Flat-Top cranes are deployed at heights of 36 and 52 meters, with jib lengths of 50 and 58 meters, respectively. Their compact design, precise control, and low noise make them ideal for sensitive, heritage-protected sites with high tourist activity. The flat-top design of these EC-B cranes significantly boosts efficiency and safety, particularly during roof and facade work.

“To be part of one of the most significant restoration projects of Galicia’s cultural heritage is a great source of pride and joy for us”

says Jesús Gañete, Managing Director of Maga Vigo.

Contributing to the Preservation of Spain’s Cultural Heritage

This project is part of a broader national refurbishment program spearheaded by Spain’s state-owned Paradores hotel group. The initial phase involves an investment of roughly 14 million euros for renovating several heritage-listed properties, including the Parador de Santiago. In total, the program will encompass restoration work on 40 historic buildings across twelve autonomous communities in Spain and the city of Ceuta. The specific work at the Parador de Santiago is anticipated to last approximately 19 months.
