Data Platform VIP+ Analysis: Used Volvo VNL Trucks Lead in Resale Value

The independent data platform VIP+, used to assess commercial vehicle resale performance across key age brackets, has analysed used Volvo VNL trucks and found they achieve higher resale values than comparable models in the US market. These trucks were designed to be safer and more fuel-efficient, delivering up to a 10% improvement in fuel economy while placing greater emphasis on the driver.

Across the full year 2025, the data shows that these sleeper-cab models hold their value better than competing trucks in the US market. For fleets, this can translate into a more competitive total cost of ownership and a stronger long-term return on investment.

“The strong resale performance of our legacy Volvo VNL sleepers demonstrates the real-world value of designing trucks that are built to last, operate efficiently, and continue delivering returns well beyond their first ownership.”

Said Peter Voorhoeve, President of Volvo Trucks North America.

In most cases, used Volvo VNL sleeper models retain 20% to nearly 30% more value than trucks of the same age and with similar mileage, reflecting solid and consistent demand in the used market. Resale value directly affects total cost of ownership and long-term return on investment, especially at a time when fleets are facing inflation, uneven freight demand, and greater overall market uncertainty. This is also why Volvo sleeper models continue to be sought after in secondary channels, supported by perceptions of robustness, driver comfort, and operational efficiency.

Volvo VNL on the North American market since 1996

The Volvo VNL was first made available in North America in 1996. Today, it remains a benchmark in the US heavy-duty sleeper segment. Over time, the model has established itself in long-haul operations and has become a point of comparison for industry standards in aerodynamics, the driving environment, and fuel efficiency. The analysis refers to the resale performance of the previous-generation Volvo VNL and not the recently launched model.

VIP+ in brief

VIP+ is a platform designed to evaluate real-world resale performance of commercial vehicles and is used by manufacturers, dealers, and fleet operators. The tool collects and cross-references resale data from dealers, manufacturers, leasing companies, auctions, and state registration records. Its valuations take into account several economic indicators, including supply and demand trends, inflation, freight activity levels, and fuel costs, in order to reflect current market conditions.
