Precision with Purpose: Makino’s Roadmap to the Smart, Sustainable Factory

What does “intelligent manufacturing” mean to you, and how is your organization contributing to this transformation?

  • To us Intelligent manufacturing is about seamlessly integrating precision engineering with data, machine-inbuilt insight process, intelligent systems, and automation to enhance efficiency, precision, adaptability, predictive, and self-optimizing manufacturing systems.
  • Makino India is driving this transformation through embedded modern and trending digital platforms, driving machining solutions for optimization, real-time analytics, predictive maintenance systems, and closed-loop manufacturing.
  • Our focus is on “Promise of Performance” delivering smart, self-optimizing machines that reduce downtime and improve productivity for our customers

Can you share a recent breakthrough or initiative that helped empower your customers or channel partners in a significant way?

  • We introduced a machine-inbuilt insight process, intelligent systems for health monitoring, reducing unplanned downtimes by over 30%.
  • We also provide cost-effective customized automation solutions by developing a high level of engineering process and design to motivate the MSMEs to transform towards Lights OFF factories. This provides an enhanced competitive edge in high-precision industries like Semiconductor, Aerospace, Die & Mold and automotive Industries.
  • Our Makino Technical Training Center (MTTC) empowers customers, channel partners, through structured hands-on training and skilled manpower.

How is your company embracing sustainability in machining – from materials to energy and lifecycle design?

  • We’re advancing dry and near-dry machining technologies to minimize coolant use and energy consumption.
  • Makino machines are designed for long-term energy efficiency, component recyclability, and modular retrofitting to enhance lifecycle sustainability.
  • ECO Mode” function developed is a standard function of all the machines, which optimizes energy consumption without compromising the relentless and reliable machine performance.

What role are MSMEs and local suppliers playing in your machine tool ecosystem, and how are you enabling their growth?

  • MSMEs play a crucial role in our supply chain, contributing to localized component manufacturing and innovation of precision parts, tooling, and automation.
  • We enable their growth through co-development initiatives, quality audits, lean manufacturing support, and digital transformation programs.
  • We provide technology transfer, access to skill development programs and relaxed commercial terms. We also collaborate with them on co-development projects, helping them transition into high-precision manufacturing and integrate into global supply chains.

How do you see digital technologies (like AI, IoT, or digital twins) redefining machine tool applications in the next 3–5 years?

  • Digital technologies will revolutionize and transform process simulation, enabling autonomous decision-making in real-time machining, remote maintenance, and predictive diagnostics. IoT-driven smart factories will become the norm, with interconnected systems optimizing production flows
  • AI and IoT will usher in self-correcting machining environments, adaptive feed control, and real-time tool wear prediction, enhancing accuracy and reducing operational costs.
  • At Makino, we are investing heavily in digital technologies, with products like iAssist, Cloud Cam and other adaptive machining and cloud-based machine monitoring platforms that improve machine productivity and reduce unplanned downtime.

Talent is a core driver of future-ready manufacturing. How are you re-skilling or upskilling your workforce for the new era?

  • Makino’s unique way of skilling young talent through dedicated skilling hubs – Makino Technical Training Center (MTTC) and Service Training Centers which provides academies to train engineers in trending manufacturing process, quality assurance, smart diagnostics, robotics, and advanced controls.
  • Collaborations with academia and government bodies help certify diploma and graduate engineers in Industry 4.0 skills.

What values or leadership principles guide your decision-making in balancing innovation, business growth, and social impact?

  • Our leadership philosophy, “Promise of Performance,” “Customer Success through Sustainable Innovation,” focuses on long-term value and environmental responsibility.
  • We prioritize innovations that drive both business value and societal good with inclusive growth
  • We are committed to collaborative growth, ensuring that customers, suppliers, employees, and communities benefit through our ecosystem-led development approach, including CSR-led skilling programs for rural youth.
  • For us, long-term success means creating shared value for customers, employees, and the communities we operate in.
