Volvo Trucks unveiled its new truck for regional and urban delivery, the Volvo VNR, in March 2025. The first units rolled off the production line in February 2026 at Volvo Trucks’ New River Valley Plant, where the company builds trucks for the North American market.

“Built on a completely new platform – 90 percent new compared with the legacy model – the Volvo VNR is purpose-built for navigating congested city streets, distribution centers, and urban routes where visibility, precision, and agility are critical.”

As Peter Voorhoeve, president, Volvo Trucks North America, explained. The new Volvo VNR features a comprehensive and innovative safety package designed to support operation in heavy traffic and pedestrian-dense environments, including integrated side curtain airbags in the cab.

Volvo Trucks North America began production of the all-new Volvo VNR in February 2026 at the company’s New River Valley Plant in Dublin, Virginia.

The truck features a tighter turning radius, making it well-suited to congested city streets, and is powered by the VGT engine rated at 405–455 hp with 1,450–1,850 lb-ft of torque, as well as the D13 Turbo Compound, which uses an exhaust heat recovery system to capture otherwise wasted energy and maximize efficiency. On fuel consumption, the new VNR delivers up to a 7.5% improvement compared with the previous model, thanks to optimized aerodynamics, advanced powertrain features, and automatic idle shutdown systems.

The start of VNR production follows the launch of Volvo’s new long-haul VNL. Together, they reflect Volvo Trucks’ application-specific approach, designed to improve performance and uptime across a wide range of fleet operations.
