The 45-ton Generation 8 excavator, developed and produced by Liebherr-France SAS in Colmar, was specifically adapted to meet the operational requirements of canal dredging projects. Excavator tailored for dredging applications Although the R 938 is typically used for earthmoving, this project required a customized configuration to enable efficient dredging operations from a floating platform. The machine operates on Ghent Dredging’s GD I pontoon, where it performs canal dredging work in inland waterways. To support these operations, the excavator was equipped with a specially adapted working configuration including: 8.7-meter gooseneck boom 5.7-meter stick 11.8-ton counterweight for improved stability This setup provides the reach needed to work efficiently at the bottom of the canal while maintaining safe operation on a pontoon. Improved visibility and operator comfort Operator ergonomics were an important factor in the machine’s design. The excavator includes a hydraulically adjustable cab that provides improved visibility in varying working conditions. Additional features include: Integrated air filtration system supplying fresh air to the cab Lashing eyes on the undercarriage to stabilize the excavator on the pontoon Load lug beneath the stick to assist with lifting tasks These features enable precise and controlled operation while improving safety and productivity during dredging activities. Strengthening the dredging fleet In 2025, Ghent Dredging expanded its fleet by acquiring two Liebherr R 938 crawler excavators, reinforcing its operational capabilities for complex dredging projects. The machines were supplied with support from SOMPT Belgium, reflecting ongoing cooperation between the companies. Long-standing expertise in special excavators Liebherr-France SAS has more than 40 years of experience in developing special-purpose excavators for applications such as: Dredging Selective demolition Tunnelling Material handling The company is also increasingly developing electrically driven special machines, reflecting growing demand for lower-emission equipment in construction and infrastructure projects. Expertise in dredging and hydraulic engineering Founded in 1976, Ghent Dredging specializes in dredging and hydraulic engineering projects across Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. The company supports marine and inland waterway projects and also provides services in earthmoving, soil remediation, and sludge treatment, serving both public and private sector clients. Liebherr R 938 Supports Ghent Dredging Operations

A specially configured R 938 crawler excavator from Liebherr Group is supporting dredging operations carried out by Ghent Dredging at the river port of Béthune in northern France.

The 45-ton Generation 8 excavator, developed and produced by Liebherr-France SAS in Colmar, was specifically adapted to meet the operational requirements of canal dredging projects.

Excavator tailored for dredging applications
Although the R 938 is typically used for earthmoving, this project required a customized configuration to enable efficient dredging operations from a floating platform.

The machine operates on Ghent Dredging’s GD I pontoon, where it performs canal dredging work in inland waterways.

To support these operations, the excavator was equipped with a specially adapted working configuration including:
  • 8.7-meter gooseneck boom
  • 5.7-meter stick
  • 11.8-ton counterweight for improved stability
This setup provides the reach needed to work efficiently at the bottom of the canal while maintaining safe operation on a pontoon.

Improved visibility and operator comfort
Operator ergonomics were an important factor in the machine’s design.

The excavator includes a hydraulically adjustable cab that provides improved visibility in varying working conditions. Additional features include:
  • Integrated air filtration system supplying fresh air to the cab
  • Lashing eyes on the undercarriage to stabilize the excavator on the pontoon
  • Load lug beneath the stick to assist with lifting tasks
These features enable precise and controlled operation while improving safety and productivity during dredging activities.

Strengthening the dredging fleet
In 2025, Ghent Dredging expanded its fleet by acquiring two Liebherr R 938 crawler excavators, reinforcing its operational capabilities for complex dredging projects.

The machines were supplied with support from SOMPT Belgium, reflecting ongoing cooperation between the companies.

Long-standing expertise in special excavators
Liebherr-France SAS has more than 40 years of experience in developing special-purpose excavators for applications such as:
  • Dredging
  • Selective demolition
  • Tunnelling
  • Material handling
The company is also increasingly developing electrically driven special machines, reflecting growing demand for lower-emission equipment in construction and infrastructure projects.

Expertise in dredging and hydraulic engineering
Founded in 1976, Ghent Dredging specializes in dredging and hydraulic engineering projects across Belgium, France, and the Netherlands.

The company supports marine and inland waterway projects and also provides services in earthmoving, soil remediation, and sludge treatment, serving both public and private sector clients.
