Caterpillar’s Battery-Electric Haul Trucks Begin Pilbara Trial With BHP and Rio Tinto

Caterpillar has teamed up with Australian mining giants BHP and Rio Tinto to begin testing two Cat® 793 XE Early Learner battery-electric haul trucks in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The trial marks a rare joint effort between major mining companies and an equipment manufacturer to assess how battery-electric haulage could perform in one of the world’s toughest iron ore environments.

After three months of on-site testing at BHP’s Jimblebar iron ore mine, the trial is beginning to provide a clearer picture of how battery-electric haulage could work at scale in the Pilbara. The programme reflects a broader industry effort to address one of mining’s most difficult decarbonisation challenges: reducing greenhouse-gas emissions from ultra-class haul trucks operating in high-output iron ore mines.

The two machines arrived at Jimblebar late last year following extensive safety validation and controlled trials at Caterpillar’s Tucson Proving Ground in the United States. They are now operating in one of the world’s most demanding mining environments, where heat, haul distances, gradients and production requirements will test both the trucks and the supporting energy infrastructure.

The trial is showing meaningful progress and reflects an industry-wide effort to tackle the complex challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in. large scale mining operations

Western Australia Premier Roger Cook and Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael recently joined representatives from BHP, Rio Tinto, Caterpillar and WesTrac to see the battery-electric trucks in operation.

“I want Western Australia’s economy to remain the strongest in the nation, which is why my government is fully behind BHP and Rio Tinto’s efforts to decarbonise and help make WA a renewable energy powerhouse”

Cook said.

“These trucks exemplify what can be achieved when leaders in our industry collaborate to find a solution to a complex problem. (…) It is machinery like this that will have a meaningful impact on reducing carbon emissions from mining operations.”

Added David Michael.

Jimblebar currently hosts two of the seven Caterpillar Early Learner battery-electric haul trucks being tested globally. The Pilbara’s scale and operational intensity make it a critical proving ground, offering data that will help assess not only vehicle performance, but also charging requirements, maintenance practices and the commercial viability of wider deployment.

Early-phase testing has already exceeded 100 operating hours and 200 test laps. The next stage will focus on high-powered charging systems, including dynamic charging technology designed to transfer energy to the trucks while they are moving. That capability could be central to maintaining productivity in large mining fleets, where charging time, haul-cycle efficiency and energy management will ultimately determine whether battery-electric haulage can be scaled across major operations.
