At Red Bull Rampage in Utah, Cat is promoting Cat Compact, a new retail format built for small contractors and owner-operators
Red Bull Rampage, the big-mountain freeride competition held in the desert terrain of southwest Utah, is not an obvious place to meet equipment buyers. That is precisely why Caterpillar is there. As an official sponsor of the event’s 25th edition, running October 8 to 10 near Virgin, Utah, the company is using it to showcase Cat Compact, a new retail customer experience aimed at small contractors, owner-operators and growing businesses.
What Cat Compact is
Cat Compact combines dedicated locations and connected digital tools to offer a simpler way to access Cat machines, rental, service and support. Locations are paired with Cat Rentals and backed by local Cat dealers, which bring together service, financing, new, used and rental equipment in one experience designed around smaller buyers.
The logic is that for these customers, the machine is only part of the decision. Access to parts, attachments, rental options and practical advice matters as much.
Marketing where customers already are
“The Cat Compact experience was designed to connect with a different type of customer, which means we have to approach marketing to them differently,” said Ashley-Brooke Winger, senior marketing consultant at Caterpillar. “Customers are forming opinions long before they enter the buying process, shaped by the people, experiences and communities they connect with.”
Rampage follows Cat’s presence at other Red Bull events in North America this year, including the Soapbox Race in Denver and the Spin-Off in Washington, D.C. At the competition, Cat machines are also part of the story behind the event, helping prepare production areas and build the infrastructure the competition needs.
Utah dealer Wheeler Machinery, which marks 75 years as the state’s Cat dealer in 2026, is hosting the Heavy Iron Rodeo on October 9, between the women’s and men’s competitions. The invite-only event at a private venue puts athletes, creators and industry guests in the operator’s seat on an obstacle course, with Wheeler experts and Cat Compact staff on hand.
For dealers, the move is worth watching. Small contractors are a large and fragmented market, and the brands that reach them before they start comparing quotes are likely to win their first machine and their loyalty.
