Over 60% of truck drivers own a pet, and nearly 40% regularly take them on the road*. Having a furry companion in the cab can lift spirits during long hauls, but safety must come first. Aware of this, Volvo Trucks has teamed up with the Center for Pet Safety, a non-profit research and advocacy organization, to raise awareness and improve travel conditions for commercial drivers and their four-legged copilots.
The new collaboration aims to support drivers in making informed decisions to keep their pets safe and comfortable during long hauls. The Center for Pet Safety will evaluate Volvo’s onboard systems and work with the company to publish a digital guide offering practical advice for drivers who travel with animals.
“For many long-haul drivers, their dog is their constant companion through every mile. Safety is in our DNA, and that extends to everyone on the road whether they have two legs or four. We’re proud to partner with the Center for Pet Safety to better understand how drivers travel with their pets and to share practical guidance that supports their comfort and safety”
Said Maddie Sullivan, product marketing manager of Volvo Trucks North America.

Specialists from the Center for Pet Safety will visit the Volvo Customer Center in Dublin, Virginia, to examine the new Volvo VNL and assess its pet safety systems. Particular attention will be given to the Volvo Parking Cooler and other integrated technologies designed to maintain a stable, comfortable in-cab climate.
This aspect is especially relevant for drivers who travel with pets and may need to leave them in the cab during short stops. Remote temperature control allows the interior climate to be managed even when the engine is off, an important feature for safeguarding animal welfare in all weather conditions.

“We’re excited to collaborate with Volvo Trucks North America to spotlight the unique needs of commercial drivers traveling with their pets. By combining Volvo’s engineering leadership with our rigorous safety standards, this partnership will deliver practical guidance, product recommendations, and travel resources tailored for the long-haul driving community.”
Said Lindsey Wolko, founder and chief executive officer of the Center for Pet Safety.
The guide is expected to launch on both organisations’ websites in early 2026. It will provide practical guidance on key aspects of pet travel, from in-cab setup and restraint systems to health and wellness planning, along with curated lists of safe rest areas across the country.
For drivers and their loyal companions, this initiative promises a safer, more thoughtful way to share the road, mile after mile.
