Spring Cleaning, The American-Made Way

Spring is in the air, and it’s a good time to freshen things up with American-made products.

Spring is in the air, and it’s a good time to freshen things up with American-made products.

With spring comes that familiar and time-honored urge to clean things up around the house. That makes now a great time to round up a few must-haves for spring cleaning. So, I walked the aisles at my local stores and read the labels.

Turns out, it was actually pretty easy to find American-made products. Here’s what I found:

Libman

Libman brooms at my local Menards

From brooms and mops to sturdy scrub brushes, Libman makes the tools that do the heavy lifting. Reliable, no-frills, and built to last, they’re the kind of products you’ll keep around long after spring cleaning is done. Made in Illinois.

Fun fact: During World War II, The Libman Company produced more than 2,500 brooms per day for the War Department to clean the decks of aircraft carriers and troop ships.

SC Johnson

Some of the most recognizable cleaning brands are made right here in the Wisconsin (and Michigan) by SC Johnson. Products like Windex, Scrubbing Bubbles, Pledge and Shout are staples for a reason. Whether you’re tackling windows, bathrooms or tough stains, these are easy go-tos.

Bonus: The company offers campus tours if you’re ever in Racine, Wis., and two of the original buildings are designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Goo Gone & Weiman

Goo Gone tackles sticky residue that won’t budge, like the stickers on your kids’ water bottles and those on car windows. The company also share stips on cleaning your air fryer with the Goo Gone Oven & Grill Cleaner. Weiman Leather Wipes, meanwhile, help bring furniture back to life. Both brands are owned by PurposeBuilt Brands and made in facilities in Colorado, Georgia, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Disclaimer: Both labels read “Made in USA with US and imported parts.”

Method

Method soap varieties available at Target

If you prefer a more modern, plant-based option, made-in-Illinois Method offers soaps and cleaners that look good on the counter and get the job done. Method operates a sustainable manufacturing plant on the South Side of Chicago, in the historic Pullman district, which was once hollowed out by de-industrialization. The company has helped revitalize the area, hiring more than 150 people and giving the community a much-needed boost. It was also the first “green” soap factory, and its rooftop features a large farm run by Gotham Greens.

Affresh

Don’t forget the appliances. Whirlpool-owned Affresh cleaners make it simple to freshen up your dishwasher and garbage disposal. These are two spots that often get overlooked but make a big difference.

Disclaimer: The label reads “Made in USA with domestic and foreign components.”

Rubbermaid

Spring cleaning often turns into full-on organizing. Rubbermaid makes laundry baskets, trash cans, storage containers and totes that are durable, lightweight and made to handle everything from closet cleanouts to everyday loads. Also, check out their food storage options. Made in Ohio.

LooHoo

LooHoo wool dryer balls are reusable, reduce waste and help cut down drying time. An easy upgrade for your laundry routine. LooHoo is woman-owned and keeps its sourcing local by using 100% domestic wool. Made in Maine.

Earth Breeze

Laundry detergent sheets are having a moment, and for good reason. Earth Breeze offers a low-mess, space-saving alternative to traditional detergents, making laundry just a little bit easier. The company has recently reshored its production to the United States from China, due to customer demand. Hooray! Made in Kentucky.

Scentsy

Once everything is clean, it’s time to make your home feel it. Scentsy wax melts come in a variety of great scents and are an easy final step that makes all your hard work feel complete. Order online or through a consultant. Made in Idaho.

I hope my list helped you discover a new product or two. It feels good to support American manufacturing and enjoy the spring breeze and a clean house!
