Pioneering Progress: Ukraine’s First 3D-Printed Home Rises from War’s Ashes

In a groundbreaking development that marks a significant milestone in Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts, the country’s first 3D-printed house has been erected near Irpin. This innovative project, supported by Metinvest Group, stands as a beacon of hope and technological advancement in the face of the ongoing conflict. The house, built for the family of fallen soldier Yaroslav Berezov, represents not just a technological feat but also a poignant symbol of resilience and recovery.

The construction of this pioneering home was a collaborative effort involving over 100 partners, spearheaded by the United for Help initiative of the Embrace the Nation Foundation. At the heart of this project was 3D UTU, which provided the first Ukrainian construction 3D printer used to create the structure. The printing process itself was remarkably efficient, with the 130-square-meter house being printed in just 58 hours. This rapid construction required 72 metric tons of a specialized quick-setting cement-sand mixture, demonstrating the potential for fast, large-scale housing solutions in post-conflict reconstruction.

Metinvest Group played a crucial role in this project by supplying over 20 metric tons of steel products free of charge. This steel formed the critical foundation, walls, and ceiling of the building, showcasing the company’s commitment to Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts. Oleg Davydenko, Director of Metinvest’s Corporate Communications Department, emphasized the company’s deep connection with the Armed Forces, noting that more than 8,000 of its employees have joined the front lines. He stated, We are ready to supply steel for Ukraine’s recovery in the volumes that our country needs, highlighting Metinvest’s ongoing dedication to the nation’s reconstruction.

The house itself is a testament to modern design and comfort. Featuring a spacious living room, three bedrooms, a kitchen-studio, and essential household facilities, it is fully equipped with necessary communications and ready for immediate occupancy. This thoughtful layout not only meets all regulatory requirements for housing but also embodies contemporary ideas of comfort and livability. The fact that this new home stands on the very site where the Berezov family’s previous house was destroyed by enemy action adds a powerful layer of symbolism to the project.

Irpin Mayor Oleksandr Markushin highlighted the significance of this project in the context of the city’s broader reconstruction efforts. With thousands of private homes damaged or destroyed during the conflict, Irpin has emerged as a leader in Ukraine’s rebuilding initiatives. Markushin views the 3D-printed house as a vivid example of how cutting-edge technology can be harnessed to revitalize communities devastated by war, potentially setting a precedent for future reconstruction projects across the country.

The emotional impact of this project cannot be overstated. For the Berezov family, who suffered the dual tragedy of losing their patriarch in battle near Bakhmut and their home during the occupation of Irpin, this new house represents a fresh start. Inna Furman, CEO of 3D UTU and head of the Embrace the Nation Foundation, poignantly described the project: This is not just a building. It is a symbol of hope for a new life that this family deserves. The timing of the house’s completion coincided with a joyous event in the family – the birth of a new child, adding an extra layer of poignancy and hope to the project.

This initiative is part of a larger commitment by Metinvest Group to support Ukraine and its citizens during these challenging times. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the company has allocated an impressive 6.9 billion UAH to various aid efforts. Of this, more than 3.4 billion UAH has been directed towards the needs of the army as part of the Steel Front military initiative, underscoring the company’s multifaceted approach to supporting the nation.
