Codelco will test Caterpillar’s Dynamic Energy Transfer (DET) system with three diesel-electric haul trucks at its Radomiro Tomic Division, in the Andes Mountains. The pilot is part of the company’s strategy to decarbonize operations through the electrification of mining equipment.

The DET system delivers electricity to trucks while in motion. It combines a power transfer module that converts energy from the grid, an electrified rail system, and a machine-connection unit that channels power directly to the drivetrain. This technology is compatible with current diesel-electric models and future battery-electric trucks.

Preliminary estimates suggest the pilot could cut emissions from participating trucks by 60% to 70% and extend engine life by reducing fuel consumption. The test is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026 and will run for about a year. It will use Cat® 798 AC haul trucks operating along a ramp equipped with electrified rails.

“This project allows us to reduce our environmental footprint while extending the useful life of our fleet without affecting productivity,”

said Felipe Lagno, Codelco’s Corporate Manager of Innovation and Technology.

The initiative is a collaboration between Codelco, Caterpillar, and Cat dealer Finning SA. Caterpillar expects the program will help refine the system’s design and performance under real mining conditions. Finning will assist with installation and provide on-site support.

“This trial represents a milestone in integrating electrification technologies into mining,” said Juan Pablo Amar, president of Finning SA.

The project is part of Codelco’s broader roadmap to decarbonize its operations. The state-owned copper producer is pursuing joint initiatives with equipment manufacturers, research centers, and universities to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies in Chilean mining.
