After customer feedback, Manitowoc has redesigned its Wire Rope Cleaner to handle ropes from 12 to 38 mm on any crane, not just Grove models
Wire rope rarely makes headlines, yet it is one of the parts that decides whether a mobile crane works or waits. Keeping it clean and properly lubricated extends its life and protects lifting performance, but doing it by hand is slow and messy.
Manitowoc introduced its Wire Rope Cleaner last year to automate that job on Grove mobile cranes. The tool removes contaminants and forces grease inside the rope so that it is protected from within. According to Manitowoc, it is faster and more efficient than manual methods, extends rope life, reduces lubricant consumption and keeps maintenance cleaner.
From one brand to any fleet
The first version was sized for the rope diameters used on Grove cranes. As adoption grew, customers began asking whether it could handle other diameters and cranes from other manufacturers. Following a redesign, the Wire Rope Cleaner now accommodates ropes from 12 mm to 38 mm in diameter, with any rope lay, on any crane brand.
For rental companies and contractors running mixed fleets, that means one tool and one procedure for rope care across all their cranes.
“What started as a technical question around differing wire rope sizes became an opportunity to improve the product,” said Astrid Hager-Guthrie, parts pricing manager for Grove Europe.
Small part, real cost
The update came out of Manitowoc’s Voice of the Customer process and is part of its CRANES+50 strategy, which focuses on value across the crane’s lifecycle.
“Keeping a wire rope clean may not seem the highest profile part of crane ownership, but it has a very real impact on uptime and operating costs,” Hager-Guthrie said. “Because a crane without a rope has no use.”
