Liebherr Mining has announced the R 9100 Generation 8 (G8), a new 100-tonne-class mining excavator that will be offered in backhoe and face shovel configurations.
The new model is available to order now and is expected to replace the R 9100 Generation 6 (G6) once series production starts. Liebherr plans to begin series production of the backhoe version in Q2 2026, followed by the face shovel version in Q3 2026, according to the company.

Pre-series field validation in Indonesia
Liebherr validated a pre-series R 9100 G8 in cooperation with PT Madhani Talatah Nusantara at the Tanjung Enim mine in South Sumatra, Indonesia. The machine has been operating at the site since September 2024, loading overburden into 100-tonne trucks.
Between September 2024 and December 2025, the excavator averaged 411 operating hours per month and recorded 92% availability on average.
According to an instantaneous production study carried out in September 2025, the R 9100 G8 achieved a fuel efficiency ratio of 9 bank cubic metres (bcm) per litre, based on a production rate of 771.2 bcm (1,589 tonnes) per hour and fuel consumption of 85.7 litres per hour.

Fuel consumption and updates from the previous model
The R 9100 G8 uses Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE) engine and hydraulic management system. Compared with the R 9100 G6, Liebherr stated the G8 consumes 20 percent less fuel and delivers 30 percent higher fuel efficiency, translating into potential fuel savings of up to 100,000 litres per year, depending on operating conditions.
In terms of platform carryover, the G8 retains key elements such as the D9512 engine in fuel-combustion-optimised configuration, the same bucket capacities, and a pressurised, FOPS-certified operator cab. Standard heavy-duty bucket sizes are listed at 7.0 to 7.5 m³ in backhoe configuration and 7.3 m³ in face shovel configuration at 1.8 t/m³, aimed at matching trucks with payloads from 45 to 100 tonnes.
Generation 8 updates include a redesigned electro-hydraulic control system, changes to the attachment and hydraulic circuit to reduce pressure losses, integrated inertial measurement units for cylinder dampening, a redesigned undercarriage with lifetime-sealed travel drives, and grease change intervals extended to at least 250 operating hours.
Digital systems and emissions roadmap
The R 9100 G8 is compatible with its IoMine technology suite, including systems such as Skyview 360°, Bucket Filling Assistant, and Data View and Data Services.
Pre-series field validation of the Tier 4 / Stage V version is scheduled to begin in 2027.
