Komatsu Launches the PC9000-12 Hydraulic Mining Excavator for Global Markets

Komatsu Germany Mining Division has launched the PC9000-12 hydraulic mining excavator for global markets, extending availability beyond Canada through Komatsu’s dealer network.

The PC9000-12 can be specified with diesel Tier 4, diesel unregulated, or an electric drive option, positioning the machine for different regulatory regimes and site requirements. The model is offered in front shovel and backhoe configurations, with a 46 m³ front shovel bucket or a 49 m³ backhoe bucket.

The excavator is built to load 240 to 400 short ton haul trucks using a three- to five-pass loading strategy. It delivers more than 80 tons of payload per pass and, under optimal conditions, can load a Komatsu 980E in five passes in under 150 seconds. That cycle time supports production rates of roughly 8,000 tons per hour.

The PC9000-12 is designed for double-side loading and is with its FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System.

The first PC9000-12 was delivered in May 2025 to an oil sands operation in Canada, with SMS Equipment acting as the launch partner for the Canadian market, supporting commissioning alongside Komatsu and the customer.
