Somalev Cranes & Logistics has dismantled two Liebherr ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes at the Port of Casablanca using two Liebherr telescopic cranes.
The Moroccan heavy-lift specialist Somalev Cranes & Logistics used two Liebherr telescopic cranes to dismantle, in a controlled manner, more than 1,400 tonnes of steel structure from two Liebherr ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes. During the work, Somalev deployed two Liebherr telescopic cranes, an LTM 1400-7.1 and an LTM 1250/1, instead of lattice boom cranes. They were selected for their high lifting capacity, flexibility, and suitability for operating in confined port areas.
The LTM 1400-7.1 operates precisely between narrow part areas and adapts flexibly to local conditions.
The project was marked by several technical challenges, including more conservative load assumptions and reinforced rigging solutions due to the cranes’ age. The work took place in an active terminal, making continuous coordination and clearly defined exclusion zones essential to ensure safety, even in tight spaces.
The two Liebherr telescopic cranes worked closely together to remove the heavy components of the STS container crane in a controlled manner.
The dismantling had to follow the reverse sequence of the original assembly. The two cranes were coordinated both across different rigging configurations and during synchronised lifting phases. Somalev maintended stringent safety standards by continuously monitoring weather conditions and crane operating parameters.
Backed by the proven reliability of Liebherr cranes, even after years of intensive service, and by detailed project planning, the complex dismantling was completed as scheduled.
