Caterpillar Acquires its Fabick Cat Dealer
Caterpillar has agreed to buy Fabick Cat, dealer for Wisconsin, parts of Missouri and Illinois and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Close expected in 30 days. Caterpillar Acquires its Fabick Cat Dealer published on The HeavyQuip Magazine.
The agreement covers Fabick Cat, a dealer with more than 100 years of history across Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
Caterpillar has entered into an agreement to acquire John Fabick Tractor Company, better known as Fabick Cat. The dealer has served customers for more than a century across portions of Missouri and Illinois, the whole of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
The announcement, made from Irving, Texas on 29 September, is short on financial detail and long on reassurance. Caterpillar describes the deal as a customer-focused decision meant to support a seamless transition of Fabick ownership while keeping the service and local support that customers know today.
An unusual move in a dealer-led model
Cat equipment reaches customers through a worldwide network of dealers, and those dealers are typically independent businesses that own the customer relationship, the service bays and the rental fleet. A manufacturer stepping in to buy one is not the everyday pattern, which is why the wording of the release matters. Caterpillar frames the transaction as a change of ownership, not a change of model, and stresses that the same local team and support will remain in place.
That matters in a territory where machine uptime is the product. Contractors, quarry operators and fleet managers in the Upper Midwest judge a dealer by how quickly a technician arrives and how reliably parts are on the shelf. Any hint of disruption to either would be felt quickly.
“Caterpillar and Cat dealers share a common mission of solving our customers’ toughest challenges,” said Joe Creed, Caterpillar Chairman and CEO. “We look forward to continuing to work with the Fabick team to build on a century of success, further strengthen the customer experience and drive long-term growth across the service territory.”
For Fabick, the message was one of pride and continuity. “We’re incredibly proud of our team and the customer relationships we’ve built over the past 100 years,” said Jeré Fabick, Chairman, CEO and Dealer Principal. COO Todd Stanley added that the next chapter “will enhance our ability to provide our customers with unmatched services, technology and expertise.”
In practical terms, the statements point in one direction: Fabick’s management stays visible, and customers are told to expect the same faces and the same service.
Timing and open questions
The agreement requires approval from regulatory authorities and is subject to other customary closing conditions. Caterpillar expects the transaction to close within 30 days.
What the release does not say is how the dealer will be run after closing, whether Fabick will keep its name and branding, or whether the deal signals a broader change in how Caterpillar approaches its dealer network. For dealers, rental companies and customers in the four-state territory, those answers will shape how much the change is felt on the ground.
