11 Made in America Dorm Essentials Worth the Purchase

We won’t be there to load your car, but we can send you off with these college student-approved American-made essentials, from mattress toppers to noise machines!

With college students across the nation moving into dorms in the next few weeks, back-to-school shopping and dorm furnishing are in full swing. There are already plenty of shopping guides full of bedding options, tech gadgets, and kitchenware items you will likely never use, so instead, I bring forth a peace offering of essentials actually worth the purchase. As a veteran of dorm life moving back into on-campus housing this fall, here’s everything you really need to make your dorm feel like home — all Made in America. 

Buying sheets and a comforter is a no-brainer for move-in, but the real hero of a good night’s sleep is a mattress topper. Parents, believe me when I tell you it is not an indulgence, but a necessity. Go ahead and grab a Serta Comfort Boost 2.5 Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper while it’s on sale to keep your college student’s mattress from feeling like a brick.

Dorm beds are notoriously high, so unless you want to get a running head start jumping on your bed (we’ve all been there once, but don’t make it twice), you need a storage ottoman that doubles as a stool. One thing I wasn’t prepared for freshman year was just how thin the walls are. It depends on where you’re living, but a lot of dorms don’t allow individual units to control the AC. If you’re a hot sleeper like I am, go ahead and throw a Lasko 12″ Oscillating Table Fan in your Amazon cart (but be sure to check the box when you receive it to verify that it comes from one of Lasko U.S. factories). It can sit on your nightstand or desk with multiple speeds and an oscillating feature to keep you cool all night. Even when I wasn’t cold, I would still use my fan on full speed for extra white noise (have I mentioned how thin the walls are?). 

If you have communal showers, you need iDesign’s Portable Plastic Shower Tote. And even if you luck out with a private bathroom, this tote is still great for storing cleaning supplies or laundry necessities. 

Speaking of laundry, I’d recommend an Ultra Wheeled Hamper from Sterlite. When you’ve put off laundry for an extra week, and the hamper is overflowing, it’s a lot easier to roll it down the hallway rather than dragging it.  

You will probably forget to take your laundry out of the dryer a few times, and your clothes are going to end up wrinkly (especially if a neighbor has already dumped them on the floor; it happens). Put your best foot forward and invest in a Jiffy Travel Steamer, so even if you just rolled out of bed, your clothes won’t look like it. Jiffy has a three-year warranty, so if it ever fails you, they’ll send you a new one.
