Siemens — a global leader in industrial machining — has introduced a new generation of processors for its SINUMERIK ONE CNC systems, pairing significantly higher computing performance and a modern graphics architecture with a platform designed for robust cybersecurity. The modern hardware provides users with greater productivity through data-driven optimization of machining processes and better use of machine data.
SINUMERIK ONE runs machine tools while maintaining digital twins, enabling simulation of machine behavior before products are introduced or machine components begin to move. Two processors carry the digitalization load: the NCU, or numerical control unit, computes tool paths and coordinates axis motion, while an integrated PLC (programmable logic controller) governs the surrounding machine environment, consisting of tool changers, coolant, doors, safety interlocks, and more. This new generation of NCU and PLC processors enhance communication and data handling capabilities, increasing the amount of information a controller can process and how long it remains maintainable in the field.
Higher performance for complex applications and communication
The new NCU 1740.2, 1750.2 and 1760.2 models provide significantly higher computing power and improve communication and data processing performance. These enhancements are complemented by a new PLC ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit), a dedicated hardware component designed specifically for PLC functionality. The combination enhances industrial and data-processing capabilities in digitally connected production environments, supporting high availability machine requirements, faster and more stable data processing, and greater performance headroom for demanding applications and future expansion.
Advanced operator interfaces and a foundation for AI
A high-performance graphics processor supports modern HMI concepts with intuitive operation and advanced visualization, empowering machine tool builders to differentiate their machines, while reducing setup times and operator training requirements. Simultaneously, the move to a 64-bit architecture caters to modern data-intensive applications and higher-level analytics systems, each of which demand addressable memory and throughput beyond what 32-bit platforms can supply. This architecture establishes the technical foundation for integrating AI capabilities by connecting machines to cloud and edge infrastructures, while folding them into data-driven workflows for quality improvement, process optimization, and predictive maintenance.
Cybersecurity as a design requirement
As connectivity proliferates, the security requirements for industrial systems become increasingly stringent, with regulations now enforced in many regions. For example, the EU Cyber Resilience Act establishes requirements for products with digital components, concentrating on long-term updateability and product security. This statute governs products placed on the European market regardless of export location, so North American machine builders exporting to Europe must comply with its scope.
The new SINUMERIK ONE processors meet today’s most rigorous requirements, and their surplus computing power provides room for future feature set and security enhancements. Patches can be deployed via a secure internet connection, supporting long-term maintainability and system resilience.
“Cybersecurity and AI readiness may appear as separate projects, but they rest on the same foundation—a control platform with the headroom for scope evolution for years to come. That is what this generation is built for. A manufacturer investing in machines today should expect compliance with best practices that have not yet even become regulatory requirements,” states Zachary Gray, Head of Machine Tool Systems Americas, at Siemens.
