Mammoet has taken delivery of the first Grove GMK5150L-1e plug-in hybrid all-terrain crane, marking the first handover of Manitowoc’s “charge-while-driving” hybrid concept in the 150 t class.
The handover took place in Breda, the Netherlands, at Manitowoc’s Dutch sales and service facility. The GMK5150L-1e joins Grove’s electrified all-terrain crane line and is positioned as a hybrid alternative for contractors and lifting firms facing tighter emissions rules and increasing scrutiny of project carbon footprints, particularly in urban areas.

150 t class, 60 m boom, battery-electric superstructure
The GMK5150L-1e is rated for a maximum lifting capacity of 150 t and is equipped with a 60 m main boom. While the carrier retains conventional all-terrain mobility, the crane’s superstructure can operate electrically via a 160 kWh battery pack, enabling zero-emission lifting on site where required.
A longer-boom sister model, the GMK5150XL-1e, was unveiled at bauma 2025 with a 68.7 m main boom.
“Charge-while-driving” and multiple charging routes
The headline feature is the ability to recharge the battery while travelling, a capability that Grove positions as a way to reduce reliance on fixed jobsite charging. Alongside this, the GMK5150L-1e and GMK5150XL-1e support several charging options: DC fast charging, 32A/400 V AC charging, and a 163 kW on-board generator.
Manitowoc points to customer input as a driver for the final configuration, with jobsite duty cycles used to size the battery for operational coverage.
“The battery capacity was precisely sized based on a comprehensive job profile analysis to ensure full operational coverage. Combined with the ‘charge-while-driving’ feature, the new Grove Plug-in Hybrid cranes deliver exceptional flexibility and independence.”
Said Andreas Cremer, vice president of product management for mobile cranes at Manitowoc

A response to low-emission requirements and uneven infrastructure
The delivery reflects a broader tension in the market: more projects are adding zero-emission requirements, but charging infrastructure remains inconsistent, especially on temporary sites or where grid access is limited.
Mammoet highlighted that reality in explaining the choice of a hybrid configuration. Eelco de Leeuw, operations manager at Mammoet, pointed to rising zero-emission targets in Dutch cities and noted that charging availability is not guaranteed across job sites:
“Charging facilities can be unavailable. That is why we are delighted to receive a hybrid all-terrain crane that can charge while driving and has its own on-board generator.”
Noise, usability, and operator input
Beyond emissions, the GMK5150L-1e is pitched as a quieter machine when operating electrically, an attribute that can matter on night work, inner-city sites, and projects with strict noise limits. Mammoet also referenced operator and technical team involvement during development through Manitowoc’s Voice of the Customer program, feeding practical feedback into the GMK5150L-1e/GMK5150XL-1e project.
Recognition for the XL variant
While Mammoet’s delivery relates to the 60 m-boom L model, Manitowoc has already been promoting the XL version through industry awards. In 2025, the GMK5150XL-1e received the “Prix de l’Innovation” from JDL Groupe in France and the “Premio Potencia 2025” in Spain (lifting, handling, and load transport category). The XL-1e has also been entered into the ESTA Awards of Excellence 2026 in the Innovation category and was selected as a finalist.
Why it matters
Hybrid and battery-assisted concepts are gaining traction in lifting as rental fleets and heavy-lift specialists look for workable paths to lower-emission operations without betting everything on fixed charging. The GMK5150L-1e’s mix of battery-electric lifting, multiple charging options, and in-transit recharging aims directly at that use case, where jobsite constraints and tight schedules often make pure plug-in strategies difficult to execute.
