KEMNA BAU rented six Liebherr’s hydraulic excavators for the renovation of the taxiway D1 at Hamburg Airport. In addition to four wheeled excavators of the A 918, A 918 Compact, and A 920 models, two R 920 Compact crawler excavators were also used. Thanks to the coordinated efforts, the construction site was completed ahead of schedule, and to a high standard.

Once the old concrete surface of the taxiway had been milled away, the four mobile excavators and two crawler excavators came into play: First, hydraulic hammers were used to break out damaged concrete patches before the taxiway was excavated and an asphalt base layer was applied as part of the extensive renovation work. This created the basis for the SAMI layer (Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer) – a type of “stress-relieving intermediate layer” – before the asphalt surface course was finally installed.

What characterises Liebherr wheeled excavators

Wheeled excavators from Liebherr can be used for a wide range of applications: be it on the D1 taxiway at Hamburg Airport, in landscaping or on inner-city construction sites. In addition to the classic wheeled excavators, Liebherr offers a variety of models for the respective application with its compact variant. The engine, high loads, and work cycles as well as mobility, make Liebherr wheeled excavators all-rounders among construction machines. Thanks to innovative technologies, such as intelligent assistance systems, they enable efficient and safe work processes. They also score points for their high level of economy and low fuel consumption, which reduces operating costs.

R 920 Compact: its flexible use

The Liebherr R 920 Compact crawler excavator combines the characteristics of a standard crawler excavator, such as high performance and versatility, with the advantages of a compact wheeled excavator. The powerful diesel engine has a performance of 110 kW/ 150 hp and meets the requirements of exhaust emission stage V. With a low tail swing radius of just 1,850 mm, it can be used flexibly on inner-city construction sites. The compact dimensions of the R 920 Compact and its low operating mass of just 19 tonnes ensure high mobility and simple, fast transport between different operating locations.

Liebherr attachment suitability

In addition to the powerful mobile and crawler excavators, Liebherr offers a portfolio of suitable attachments for the respective application. For example, the Liebherr TR25 Tiltrotator was used during the renovation of the taxiway at Hamburg Airport. This machine optimally utilises its advantages thanks to the pivoting angle of 2 x 50° and 360° rotation when working at close range. Various backhoe and ditch-cleaning-buckets were also used to carry out the renovation work. Thanks to the fully automatic LIKUFIX quick coupling systems, a safe and quick replacement was possible directly from the operator’s cab.
