In this context, MAN Truck & Bus introduced the TGX 41.640 8x4/4 heavy-duty tractor unit designed for gross vehicle weights of up to 250 tonnes. Designed for high-mass industrial transport operations The new four-axle TGX model is intended for applications including the transport of wind turbine components, high-voltage transformers and other oversized industrial equipment. The vehicle is powered by the MAN D3876 inline six-cylinder engine delivering 640 hp and 3,000 Nm of torque, available between 900 and 1,380 rpm to support heavy loads at low speeds. The drivetrain integrates a torque converter clutch (TCC) within the MAN TipMatic 12.30 OD automated transmission. This configuration enables controlled start-up under heavy loads, with torque multiplication of up to 1.59. A Retarder 40 system supports continuous braking performance and thermal stability during demanding transport operations. Transmission control software includes dedicated operating modes, including a heavy haulage programme for loads up to 250 tonnes and an efficiency mode designed for loads up to 70 tonnes with reduced fuel consumption. Factory integration of heavy haulage systems The base vehicle is produced at the MAN facility in Munich and then equipped with heavy-duty components at the MAN Truck Modification Center in Wittlich through the MAN Individual programme. Key heavy transport components are integrated into a structural module positioned behind the cab. This module includes four compressed-air tanks providing an additional 160 litres of air capacity, a 960-litre diesel tank and a 290-litre reservoir supporting a two-stage hydraulic system. The hydraulic system operates at pressures of up to 300 bar and provides oil flow rates of either 20 or 40 litres per minute depending on axle steering requirements. A dedicated heavy-duty cooling system is also integrated to maintain engine temperature stability during low-speed, high-load operation. Coupling and control systems for multi-axle trailers The tractor unit is equipped with a JOST JSK 38 C (3.5") fifth-wheel coupling mounted on a sliding mechanism with 800 mm adjustment range to optimise load distribution. For push or pull operations, the vehicle also includes a front-mounted indexing coupling. A ROCKINGER 56 EA rear coupling is available as an option, supporting automatic locking for coupling operations on uneven terrain. Hydraulic and pneumatic systems are designed to support the steering and levelling of heavy-duty trailers with 30 or more axles, supporting precise vehicle control during transport manoeuvres. Vehicle configuration and operator environment The tractor unit can be configured with the MAN Individual Lion S package, which includes optional interior and exterior modifications. These include design elements such as carbon-fibre components and interior features including Alcantara seat materials, enhanced seating configurations and optional driver comfort systems intended for long-distance heavy transport operations. Service coverage and operational support The heavy-duty TGX model is supported by MAN service contracts, extended warranty programmes and uptime support services. Digital fleet and maintenance tools include MAN Perform, Compliant M, Timed and ServiceCare platforms. Service coverage is supported through a network of approximately 1,670 service locations across more than 140 countries. Financing and insurance options are available through MAN Financial Services, including structured purchase and coverage programmes intended to support heavy transport fleet operators. Heavy transport portfolio expansion The TGX heavy-duty tractor extends MAN’s heavy transport range, which covers vehicles from 3.5 to 250 tonnes across the TGE, TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX series. Electric variants are also available in weight classes between 12 and 42 tonnes.
