BOMAG Upgrades RS 650-2 Recycler/Stabilizer With New Cab, Controls

BOMAG has upgraded its RS650-2 Recycler/Stabilizer for large-scale cold asphalt recycling, base stabilization and subsoil improvement projects with a new cab design and enhanced material processing.

A series of cab updates aims to improve operator comfort, ease control and increase safety.

The operator’s station, which includes an adjustable air-suspension seat, control lever and display, can slide the full width of the cab and rotate 45 degrees in either direction for direct sight lines to the sides of the machine. The entire cab can be raised while working, for visibility around the machine, and lowered to 122 inches for simplified transport.

A full color, 7-inch touchscreen replaces the analogue screen from the previous model. Operators can quickly navigate through operating panels to adjust rotor depth and speed, gate positioning, emulsion and water injection rates and view diagnostics of machine issues. The new display is the same model used in BOMAG’s RS 460, providing operators continuity between machines.

A standard enhanced camera system features:

  • Four cameras — front, rear, left and right — providing 360-degree coverage of the machine.
  • Two fore/aft cameras mounted on the rotor housing allow operators to see rotor gate positioning and material gradation.
  • Two 10-inch monitors — one for the 360-degree camera system and one for rotor feed — display video feed to the operator.

Noise levels inside the cab have also been reduced.

“These are significant upgrades to the RS 650-2 design to improve operator comfort and productivity,” says Randy King, recycler/stabilizer business development manager for BOMAG. “The new controls offer simple, intuitive machine operation, and our new camera system improves visibility on a machine that already offered great visibility.”

Power and Performance

The RS 650-2’s Flexmix design delivers high-quality mixing results with optimized costs for a wide range of projects, including landfill construction, new developments, oil field pads, large industrial construction, parking lots, highways and airports, the company says.

In addition to the front and rear gates, this design features a third adjustable gate that keeps material engaged with the rotor longer to offer better material gradation and compaction in both forward and reverse travel.

The RS 650-2 has an articulated frame, allowing for a tight steering radius and maneuverability in tight spaces such as cul-de-sacs. The steerable rear axle enables four different steering modes — rear-axle, articulated, synchronous and crab — and up to 15 degrees of oscillation for optimal ground contact and improved traction in a variety of jobsite conditions. These drive design advantages, along with 4x4 all-wheel drive with anti-slip control, BOMAG says, allow the machine to maintain performance when working on difficult subgrades and soft material.

A hydrostatic rotor drive provides continuously variable rotor speeds from 104 to 140 rpm to minimize tool and rotor wear and match performance to site conditions. Its hydrostatic overload protection system automatically absorbs load shock when an obstacle is hit to prevent damage to the gearbox. “It’s a strong system that keeps the crew working,” adds King. “Hitting obstructions with machines using either belt or chain rotor drive often results in damage that can leave a machine down for hours.”

The recycler/stabilizer’s 653-horsepower 8-cylinder diesel engine provides the power and torque and traction required to push a 40-ton emulsion tanker while pulling a 30-ton water truck at the same time.

A BMS15 quick-change tooth/holder system features a maintenance-free design,  easy handling, and the ability to absorb high mixing forces. The holder quickly bolts on with only 75 lbf of torque. High-wear-resistant steel delivers a long service life to lower owning and operating costs.

A standard central lubrication system reduces daily maintenance. Special radiators ensure low dust adhesion and easy cleaning.
