500 Trucks, One Fuel Bet: Reinert Goes Big on Bio-LNG With Volvo

The German logistics company has placed Volvo Trucks’ largest ever order for gas-powered trucks, after testing the concept with a fleet of 50

While much of the debate on heavy transport focuses on batteries, one German fleet owner has placed a very large bet on gas. Reinert Logistics has ordered 500 Volvo FH Aero gas-powered trucks, the largest order for gas trucks in Volvo Trucks’ history. Deliveries will start in 2027.

The contract was signed at the IAA Transportation show in Hanover. It follows positive experience with an initial fleet of 50 gas-powered Volvo trucks.

“We recognized early on that bio-LNG was the right solution for us. Being able to operate our trucks with a locally produced fuel made from manure, organic waste or biogenic residues is simply brilliant,” said René Reinert, founder and owner of Reinert Logistics. He added that experience in daily operations, and Volvo’s service network for gas trucks, had reinforced the company’s choice.

Range and fuel

The FH Aero gas trucks can cover up to 1,000 km on a single tank and run on either conventional LNG or bio-LNG. Volvo notes they suit long-haul and regional distribution as well as construction operations. In Germany, Norway, Finland and Sweden, all gas filling stations now offer bio-LNG. Citing the German Gas and Hydrogen Industry Association, Volvo says bio-LNG made up around 98.5% of the fuel sold at German LNG stations in 2025, enabling CO2 reductions of up to 100% on a well-to-wheel basis. Range, Volvo notes, depends on weather, weight and driving style.

“We see a strong demand for our gas-powered trucks,” said Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks. “This order shows that more sustainable transport can be a highly cost-effective alternative already today.”

Volvo has delivered more than 10,000 gas-powered trucks worldwide, and 2025 was its best year yet for the technology.

Why it matters

For long-haul fleets, the attraction of gas is that it cuts emissions now, with existing refuelling infrastructure and ranges close to diesel, while battery-electric long-haul trucks and charging networks are still scaling up. Reinert’s order shows that, for some operators, the transition runs through more than one technology.
